This SEM image shows an ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) coating on a heated AFM cantilever tip. The UNCD film was grown by Advanced Diamond Technologies, Inc. and is ~40 nm thick. The AFM tip has a radius of ~30 nm and is capable of reaching 1200 degrees C. These devices are used for studying surface metrology, fabricating nano-scale structures, and imaging surfaces in contact or tapping modes.
