An outbreak strain of Shigella boydii 18 was inoculated onto fresh parsley and then treated with FIT, which is a commonly utilized food washing agent. Following this treatment, parsley samples were prepared using standard means for scanning electron microscopy and imaged using the ESEM in the Microscopy Suite. This image shows intact bacteria on a leaf of parsley; the net-like material is the remnants of a biofilm that apparently protects the bacteria from the food washing agent.
