The cover image on the February 2005 issue of the journal Materials Today is a colorized SEM of a polymer nanostructure filter element for a microfluidic device, and accompanies an article by Beckman faculty member John Rogers and MRL professor Ralph Nuzzo called 'Recent progress in soft lithography' (Materials Today, Volume 8, Issue 2, , February 2005, Pages 50-56). New optical methods enable rapid fabrication of complex three dimensional nanostructures with a wide range of geometries. These structures can be used for a variety of applications, including the one illustrated here: a nanostructured filter for a microfluidic device. The filter in this case removes tiny suspended beads (colorized to appear blue) from fluid flows directed from left to right. This image was colorized in the VMIL using Photoshop's solid color adjustment layers. Masks for those layers were applied and edited, and set to be semi-transparent in order to easily visualize whether components belong to the beads or the filter.
