The figure shows a proposed optical probe for a new generation Near-field Scanning Optical Microscope (NSOM). The NSOM tip with a [10,10] armchair nanotube investigates a butane molecule on SiO2 surface. The concept is by Slava V. Rotkin, Paul S. Carney, Beckman Institute. The illustration was created in the VMIL using Maya, a 3D modeling and animation package. The molecular models were built using Cerius2, and then converted to Maya using mol2mel, a custom VMIL data conversion package. The image was produced by Benjamin Grosser and Slava V. Rotkin.
